Mutual Respect and Tagging

I don't want to drag out the tagging debate but I thought it was worth posting a copy of a comment I've posted elsewhere:

It's comes back to that word RESPECT

I respect the fact that BCUK have to make decisions in order to run their business.

In return I feel that BCUK must have some respect for their users and treat them with respect.

I've no problem with the reduction in the length of tags - the issue is/was the way that it was handled. Give a little bit of notice (ie more than 2 days) I could have re-organised the few affected tags.

I enjoy being part of this community - long may it continue.

Right let's carry on with some RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE BLOGGING

With the email I woke up (which I'm about to post) I don't think I can be bothered with respect. It's a nice idea though.

  I've read it and it's not worth giving it blogspace - delete and ignore would be my advice.
  
  Since you've already replied and posted that will have got it off your chest so why not simply make the post for your eyes only and walk away from it with pride.

I have to admit, I didn't really have too much of a problem with the tagging fiasco and the removal of the buzz and featured blogs on the main pages. It was the annoying replies and sarcy comments from the 'team' which got my goat. Plus PMS, a lot of wine and the fact that I've not really been in the 'blogging zone' for a long time. Ho hum. I think I may return in the new year, although when my pro status is up, I won't be renewing it.

  Yes it was a task simply mis-managed and the subsequent explanations etc only fuelled the situation.

I know I'm flogging a dead horse, but the biggest issue in this whole debacle for me was the fact that bcuk showed no thought for the needs of the users, and only appeared to do so once they were called on it. It's like politicians breezing on until they get caught with their hand in the till when they finally give a grudging apology. Saying sorry once you've been caught out is a good thing, but better all round would be to not do anything that you could be caught out for. The underlying message for me is that we users are a smaller concern than them running their business for major advertisers. It's interesting to note that when I published their company aims here:

the managing director Vasco actually replied to me, defending his company. He's promised that they will communicate better in future (and I hope they do), but it's also interesting to note that he couldn't be bothered to reply to my suggestion on that thread about a user group.

It's also of interest to me that they appear to be not relenting on this entirely arbitrary and unnecessary 5 word limit in tags, as predicted.

But having said all that, I agree: let's get back to the task in hand!

  I hope that some lessons have been learned and that some good will come out of all this.
  
  I'm just a bit disappointed that the 5 word limit couldn't be relaxed but I'll get round that. I know that many bloggers haven't grasped what the fuss was about and think we over-reacted. I guess if the tag culling didn't affect/bother them they wouldn't understand.
  
  I felt sorry for the support guys stuck in the middle.

    Indeed, I have nothing bad at all to say about the support staff: it's the decision-making management I wanted to talk to about this, and I'm pleased I managed to goad them into replying.
